Majestic Jr. in Buckeye Burl

This is actually the first Majestic of any style that I've made. Funny that it took me so long. The barrels are one of the buckeye burl blanks that EB had on sale a while back. I wish I had purchased a couple more of them. I used TBC bushings to get close to the final diameter, then went with the tubes directly on the centers to finish turning and finishing. The finish is GluBoost medium, then thin, wet polished through the zona grits, then buffed with tripoli and white diamond.

Overall, I'm happy with how it came out, but here's me being picky...
* Even though the scratches buffed out to my eyes, the surface isn't flat and even after buffing.
* The top of the cap barrel only has the clip ring between it and the embossed area. The clip ring is narrower than the rest of the hardware, so it looks off to me.

(I thought about saving this for the pretty wood contest at the bash, but I'm not sure we're doing that this winter yet and I'm not that patient.)

Todd, it is a very attractive pen. I see what you mean about the clip ring. Maybe it's just a reflection, but it kind of looks like there is a "shelf" between the blank and the hardware, like the blank was not turned down far enough. I know reflections can be notorious for that, especially on close ups.

Is it a full Majestic or a Majestic Jr.? On my Majestic Jrs. the bushing that mates with the clip ring is specified at 0.560" and my calipers also measure it at 0.550". I also measure the clip ring at 0.550". So, since the clip ring appears to have a very tiny radius, a blank at exactly 0.550" might have a tiny "shelf" at the interface with the clip ring. If so, you might consider turning the blank a couple of thousandths smaller on that end the next time.

Regardless, it is still a very attractive pen and the blank pairs really nicely with the plating on the kit. I will have to remember your choice and consider buying some of that Buckeye from Ed to use on my Majestic kits. Who knows, maybe I will take advantage of your impatience and enter one in the next BASH myself.

So I saw what you were talking about originally and thought yeah that is very apparent. After @egnald's comment, I revisited the images and actually think the step might be intentional. The pen designer more than likely created the step due to the embossing on the otherside so that it looks balanced. This, at least, is my take on the matter. Regardless, that is a very attractive pen.

Buckeye burl is such a beautiful wood. I really like the MJr kit and have sold a few.

Most kits balance that difference in diameter with another ring besides just the clip. I'd rather see that with a tenon and notch for the clip, but PSI isn't going to remake a popular kit like that just for me, so I'll live with it.
