I have been experimenting with brilliant urushi colors and raised flower blossoms in Maki-e Technik for a while and this is the first result. The white urushi is made with lightfast titanium white and the yellow one with lightfast cadmium yellow. Snow white is not possible in the world of Urushi, because the lacquer has a color like amber or honey. Perhaps a little too many blossoms but still quite nice. What do you think?

All the best,

Martin

Superb artistry Martin! OK, I have NEVER, EVER felt any inclination/need to offer any suggestions for your work 😄, but you did ask.

There is the subtle hint of deep red in the base dark colors; I would suggest less flowers and more of the red tint. More red may not be a good match for the Daisy's, but this is just a thought. I love your base color mixes and enjoy seeing them. Adding flowers in a quantity that will not overwhelm your beautiful base may be a good trade-off. This just my opinion.

What do I think? I think "Wow!" I always thought of Urushi as a final lacquer, not something to actually paint with. That's beautiful. How many flowers it should have is entirely a matter of personal preference and, I expect, a lot of people would prefer it just like it is.

I totally agree with you. The base lacquer is a very nice cherry-read Tamenuri and the many blossoms are just cover it
