Segmented Bowls

Started down the segmented bowl path and quickly got addicted (just like pen making). Here are my most recent creations.

I've built the segmenting jigs but have yet to start on a bowl. How difficult did you find it t first? And what software do you use to determine the dimensions?

Same thing happened to me. Hardly have time to do anything away from the shop now!

I did not find it difficult to do. I upsized my segment widths to give me a little more tolerance. The hardest part I found is gluing the rings together and keeping them relatively concentric (why I went with wider widths). I glued them off of the lathe which makes it a little more difficult. The other challenge for me is sanding the disks flat before gluing. I made a large disk sander jig for my lathe. The "spiral" bowl is 3/8" thick segments which were difficult to hold on the sander. Burned some holes in work gloves that I used. A drum sander would be much better.
For my first bowl I used scraps in case there were issues.

I use the Woodturner Pro suite for design. There are tutorials on how to use it on the website. There is a trial period for the software that does not have any limitations so you can try it out before buying.
