I have about a 5 ft long 3 inch thick branch that was given to me by an older retired preacher (102 to be exact). His daughter brought it from California all the way to Oklahoma to give it to me with his personal Bible. Anyways, the branch is yellow almost like a off banana color, I finally turned a pen and it turned out stunning, can you help identify the wood?
The long branch came from California. Help Identify!

Off banana colors: Willow, Aspen, Magnolia - specifically as they age? I'm just guessing, as I know kiln dried aspen is somewhat whiter. And so are fresh cut willow and magnolia; I just don't know if they age to a banana-ish color. The holly that I have worked with have aged more ivory in color, or gray if not dried properly, so I would not guess that as aged holly.

I have turned some citrus wood (trifoliate orange) that ended with a very similar look for both color and appearance.

I would lean towards willow, personally. Hard to really tell without bark, leaves, etc

An end grain shot might help ID it . There appears to be one small knot on the pen . Are there others on the branch ? Were you told that it was a branch , not a tree ? If it was from near where your friend lives , what would the probable growing conditions be ? Wood hardness , relative to oak or other common wood ?

I received some similar wood - not that long - it was from an Orange Grove in central Ca - looked just like that!

My first thought was grapefruit; orange second.
I reached out to another friend that is also acquainted with the older gentleman. He said it looks like the Japanese Maple that is in the front of the house.
The end grain is hard to see, due to the color of the branch. And the knots on the pen, are not visible until you start working on the wood.
