Hi everyone!
I've been working on this one little by little for the past few weeks because there were a series of firsts technique-wise I wanted to implement to take my game up a notch. These included the clip (and its mounting), the trim rings, and the gold plating... all done by hand, at glacial speed, with many-a-failed-attempt . Totally worth the effort though! I look forward to improving and incorporating them in all of my future pens. They really add another dimension I think I've been missing from my kitless pens.

Some selected specs...
Capped length: 5.9"
Cap Diameter: 18mm
Body Diameter: 15mm
Thread Diameter: 14mm (triple start)
Section Material: Japanese Ebonite
Finish: Mercury Flexible CA
Clip Material: 18K Gold Plated Stainless Steel
Cap and Body Trim Rings: 18K Gold Plated Brass
Nib: Gilded Steel Bock #6

I hope you like it and I would love to hear any feedback!

Looks fantastic, great job

Absolutely stunning. Seriously, this one really is a masterpiece. 👏
It's got my wheels turning for ideas on how to do the hidden clip design like you did, while trying to think of ways to minimize the catastrophic failures that would ensue if I were to try it. Like, how to monkey-proof the procedure to protect the pen from…well, me.

I'm sure it's long gone, but did you ever happen to get a good picture of the fitting within the cap that secures the clip? I imagine that would've been hard to photograph…😬🤞

Thank you very much! The clip process was definitely the scariest part, no doubt. Or more specifically, making the opening for it to go in. Getting it perfectly centered, without any tear-out, and keeping it tight to the clip itself to avoid a gaping hole in the cap all ran through my mind the entire time. I definitely did a bunch of practice runs, that's for sure.
As far as how the clip is secured inside the cap, I had a reject clip lying around and thought I could just show you this way rather than clumsily trying to explain...

Hopefully that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about any of the process.

Oh that definitely helps haha. That's so much more simple than I had anticipated and now it's seems so forhead slappingly obvious that I should have of course assumed it was done this way. 😂🤦🏼‍♂️
I had theorized this elaborate "slot channel thingy" that's indexed with a few screws and all types of nonsense.

It's a good thing I'm not an engineer. Thank you, I'll have to try this.

Beautiful pen indeed Jeremy. OK, you screw the clip to the disc. But how do you secure the disc in the cap?

Thank you! The disc is secured by the delrin/plastic lining, if that make sense. The disc sits on top of the lining tube like a hat as it is inserted into the wood cap hole. It prevents the disc from falling out of the cap or being pulled/levered out by lifting the clip. I'm sorry I don't have any spare parts near me to illustrate the process at the moment, but if I find any I will post an update!

Very clear, thanks Jeremy.
Btw, my nerves are much more relaxed while drilling the slot since I use a Oneway drilling wizard. Clean and very precise.

I had to look up that tool, I had never heard of it. Looks very useful!

I used a milling attachment on my metal lathe...

I was most worried about the cap coming loose or overshooting my measurements. I made it work though!

This is a truly amazing piece of work! You're such an inspiration for all of us who want to go a step forward in this nice hobby (for me, at least)!
Just one question and few thoughts about the design: did you gold plate the brass by yourself or you got support from a jeweler? The band centers are amazing, such a fine workmanship!
Next, about the design, two other thoughts: first, you may want to have a screwed finial on the cap, in this case you can make the opening for the clip more easier , also attaching it would be much easier and all will be covered and fix in place by the finial. Which finial brings me to the second thought: you may consider inserting such gold plated brass accessories (bands or cabochons) in finials (for cap and barrel), that will, of course, challenge you more, but, where is the fun? :)))))
However, great job, congratulations!

Thank you for the kind words!
Regarding the gold plating, that was all done by me with various components and materials. I used an adjustable DC power supply like this (along with beakers and nickle/gold plating solutions):

I considered having a jeweler do the plating, but I wanted to do as much of the work myself as possible.

Regarding the finial idea, I certainly think you are right in saying it is much easier to incorporate the clip that way (and I have used that method in the past!). However, I chose to go the route I did in order to make the wood the star of the show and avoid adding more distracting components or visible joints. Then you might ask, "Then why did you include a clip at all?". My answer would be that this pen was made for someone I was not close to or familiar, so his preference for pen construction was unknown to me. I think non-pen enthusiasts typically expect a clip and so it now gives the option to place it in a pocket or pouch with the clip holding it in place and act as a roll-stop all at once. I think a nice finial could both have a functional and visual appeal!

Thanks again for taking the time to send your thoughts!
