Nice segmenting as always!
Probably caused by the light background. The camera compensates to balance the exposure time. Try putting the pen on a slightly darker background, maybe a tan or sienna.

Good idea, and right enough, my photographs only started to look dark after using that white background ( Duh! )
I'll change it for the next photographs.
