Was challenged by my co-worker/friend Jim to create a hybrid blank. Even though I have been working with resin much longer than I have been turning pens, I was a little bit skeptical at how it would turn out. I gave it the 'ol college try and holy hell am I glad I did. It was a very rewarding project with a stunning result that has me excited to experiment more with resin/wood combinations.
The wood is Black Walnut that I got from a scrap pile my father in law had laying around. I did not stabilize the wood with any sort of resin before casting the blank; however, I am 98% certain that it was dried in a Kiln prior to me rescuing the scrap pile.
The resin is Smoothon Smoothcast 326 - colored with Eye Candy's Ocean Blue and Pearl-Ex's Pearl White pigment powders.
Kit is a Cigar Pen from Woodcraft.
