Its crazy grain; to be honest i don't know if i cut endgrain or sidegrain. Have a look at the rough cuts. I used the piece on the rightThat is really interesting grain. I like this a lot.
thank you, its called mysterious sky from uk pen blanks.Very nice. What kit did you use?
I don't think the Euro-Middle East sycamore is a hybrid of the American Sycamore. The sycamore tree was mentioned in the Bible 600-800 years BC. 2000+ years before Americana."Interesting that the European version is thought to be a hybrid of the American Sycamore."
Hahhahaa well there is a target audience for sure. I think that knife scales would bring out this feature in a better way. Also it would be interesting to experiment with dyes and bold colours. CheersLooked like bacon before you cut it. If they named it Baconwood, they'd sell more of it.
Thank youWhat a combination! The interesting wood with that kit make for a very elegant pen. Outstanding.
I am not an expert on this but i ll try to find out more from one. Wikipedia says that the platanus tree is the sole survivor of its kind and that is found in 8 variations. Its a huge tree when old and is quite normal to have a hollow trunk or similar deformities in the branches; now i understand that this grain provides stability(among other things of course).I don't think the Euro-Middle East sycamore is a hybrid of the American Sycamore. The sycamore tree was mentioned in the Bible 600-800 years BC. 2000+ years before Americana.
Actually is much lighter in colour, that picture is not good at all. I think these are better, cheersI had looked it up also and found that it was the equivalent of Sycamore. Interesting that the European version is thought to be a hybrid of the American Sycamore. I have a nice chunk of it and wonder how I need to cut it to get that look. I think the American version is little lighter in color.
Hello Hank.I don't think the Euro-Middle East sycamore is a hybrid of the American Sycamore. The sycamore tree was mentioned in the Bible 600-800 years BC. 2000+ years before Americana.
Arreed, the three are not related.Hello Hank.
It is believed that the 'Sycamore' mentioned in the bible is the sycamore fig ( Ficus sycomorus )
American Sycamore botanically is Platanus occidentalis = Oriental Plane Tree
European Sycamore botanically is Acer pseudoplatanus = Sycamore maple
Theabove 3 trees are not related.
Well, there is beefwood. Not quite bacon, but along the same lines. I doubt it grills up as nicely as a steak, but it's sure a pretty wood.Looked like bacon before you cut it. If they named it Baconwood, they'd sell more of it.
Very nice to meet relatives from abroad. CheersI have this slab of quartersawn sycamore that appears to have a similar lace-like grain, but it's only on the one side. I bought it for bowls, but might have to try a couple pens.
