Greetings - I made a Gunmetal Cigar today using a blank I have had laying around for quite a while. The blank is a simple segment made with Walnut, Cherry, and Walnut and Cherry veneers. As the heading eludes to, it cracked when I pressed in the tip.

I don't know if I would be successful trying to use cherry wood filler or anything to repair it so I am probably going to re-turn the bottom tube out of all Walnut. I think it will still make a nice looking pen even if the bottom is not segmented like the top. I also thought perhaps I could just turn about 3/8 inch of the bottom off and glue on a piece of Walnut burl, but I just don't know how that would look.

Regards - Dave

I would a turn it off and add the walnut segment you described. You might want to consider doing it to both ends.
Good luck,
Larry

If you can disassemble both sections, maybe a matching wood for each end. I'd suggest the same darker walnut as the middle; I believe this is what Larry (above) was suggesting.

Hi all:

I decided to take the easiest but least likely to succeed approach first and it was successful.
I knocked it apart, sanded the blank down to remove the CA, filled the crack with some red oak wood and grain filler, blended the color a little with a wood touchup marker, and then re-finished it with CA. Although I can see the crack because I know where to look, it essentially vanished into the wood grain of the cherry.

I figure if it continues to bother me, just knowing it is there, I can always take the next step as Mark and Larry suggested. But for now, I'm going to just let it be.

Thanks for your ideas and comments.

Best Regards,
Dave

Put it under the clip. Cherry is not a wood that is prone to crack. Other things had to happen to cause that. I do not like the idea of walnut oops bands. Does not fit in theme. If I were pressed to fix it I would use thin strip running lengthwise with 4 on each end and two being shorter than other two. But I would be able to route them in. Sometimes you have to do what is available to you.
