Made these recently. They are still fun to make.
I do have a question for all you penmakers.
As far as rollerball refills go, for long term storage, should I take them out and lay them flat?
Currently the pens are displayed with the ink roller pointed down.

Looks almost like a capless jr gent. How do you get the ashes so bright? I try and try using buckeye and dont put a finish on it but it never looks like stacked ashes like yours do. Just awesome work man! Do you take shavings and layer them and build them up?

I was at a conference several years ago
and he did a demonstration. It was quit
process.

Thank you all for the kind comments.
Terry, I had been using the CSUSA Artisan jr Gent. However, since they changed it yet again the plastic to metal thread combination is terrible.
So, I decided to switch to their Apprentice version. It has painted metal to metal threads and is a 2-start thread. It is less expensive and the plating is probably not as good but it threads together much more easily.
Joe, I use buckeye burl for the ashes so I can carve it. A black acrylic paint is used for the base and I now use a white correction pen to apply the white accent.

Oh I gotcha. I tried using a live edge piece of walnut to try to get the burnt paper look on the walnut. I never even thought of paint. Man I would love to watch you make 1 or 2. If you ever do anything up by Fargo, ND I will DEFINITELY be there!
