I've wanted to make a pen with an ink window for a little while, more as a technical exercise than anything else. This pen uses a cartridge/converter so it doesn't really benefit as much from having an ink window in the way a piston/vac filler does. However it could be converted to an eye dropper very easily in which case the window is useful. It's a first step in my plan towards making an entire filling system.

The pictures here show it filled with red ink.

The cap threads are 13mm and the barrel is 15mm at its widest part. The bit I was really focusing on was how to get the window close to the cap threads without the internal threading for the section being visible through the window. It gets quite tight around there and you don't have a lot of room to play with.
On the whole I'm happy with how it came out.

Cheers
Ash

Very nice Ash. What would you need to change to convert it into an eye dropper?
Thanks.

The simple way is to just add silicone grease, (I use the stuff divers use), to the section threads and to the nib housing threads. I've done this successfully but if you do that I would advise using it as a desk pen as I'm not sure how much shaking around it could take if carried around a lot in a bag or pocket.

The addition of o-rings (small rubber washers) is a more thorough approach. Typically any leakage is going to occur through the section-to-barrel join or between the housing and the section so those are the areas that require sealing.

Cheers

Very nice Ian, love the ink window, it adds an interesting visual element to the pen (on top of being a functional feature). And thank you for sharing the eyedropper-making process.
Sounds like you are using the Semplicita blanks for Beaufort Ink (I've had an eye on their Shades of Tiffany color, I'm going to have to place an order one of these days).

Thank you, and yes it is the Beaufort Ink acrylic. I use it a lot and can highly recommend it.
