I got frustrated when it took three attempts to get the section sort of right for a fountain pen this morning so I tried something new (for me anyway.) Not sure what you would call it. Kitless click maybe..
Anyway is has the Schmidt 88 click and Schmidt front end. More of a trial run to see if I could do it. Maybe a clip on the next one and an opaque blank to hide the threads.

Great work!!!!! Great looking pen!!! If you don't mind, I do have a few questions.

1. Did you you a wood lathe or a metal lathe?
2. Did you use the tap Milan sells of one from another source?
3. What is the OAL of the body?
4. What size drill did you use to drill the body?

And the answer is yes, I plan to make one of these. I did not know of Milans Pens before your post, but this is exactly the sort od pens I enjoy making. No internal brass tubes, just prep, drill, thread and finish - I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi DrD
1. Currently I only have a wood lathe. (I hear that a family member has a metal lathe in there basement that I may be able to use/have but I know nothing about it and was told it took 4 guys to get down there. I have to do some investigating on this.). I turned between centers after I drilled and tapped it.


2. I used the taps from Milan's pens. M7x0.75 for the click and M8.5x0.5 for the capless tip. The latter is the same threads as the fountain pen sections that I bought. Springs and Schmidt 9000 refills are from exotic blanks but Milan's has them as well.

3. OAL of the body is approximately 3.66inches or 93mm. OAL of the completed pen with the tip retracted is approximately 5 inches or 127mm. (I made it about 10mm long to start and shortened until it fit together correctly.)

4. I drilled the full length with a letter D drill bit. This is what I calculated for the smaller tap. Then I drilled one end with an 8mm for the other tap. Then I took just a small amount with I believe letter R bit to seat the tip. (Forgot to write this info down.)

This will be my next project, but the finished pen will take some time - I've got to get all the goodies together.

I see you're in Wisconsin - go Badgers . We lived for a few years in Appleton before returning to warmer climes. Loved Wisconsin, and really miss the Friday night Fish-Fries.

Go Badgers and Pack! We are not terribly far from Appleton. Between Stevens Point and Marshfield. Friday fish fries and old fashions. šŸ˜„

Both ends are threaded so I suppose one could go at it either way but I think it's easier through the nib end. I think I may put a drop of thread locker on the click side of I get one I plan on keeping or selling.
 
I found one clip that the click mechanism fit through and was sized about right. Not sure what kit it is off as it was in a spare parts bin. The Schmidt click does not fit through any of the slim line clips I have. it's a bit sloppy and the plating doesn't make sense with the chrome "nib".

It makes about as much sense as any of the Schmidt-clicker kits, since they all have the same sort of plating/chrome mismatch - although I do seem to remember seeing someone selling 24kt plated clickers somewhere.

edit: Oh... right... the nib doesn't match. Please ignore the bat, ladies and gentlemen.

I have not seen the gold clickers but I have seen black ones. Won't help in this situation though
 
2nd and 3rd attempts.
Second broke taking the tail stock off after it was all polished up. Third survived. And I really like it but wish it had a clip.

Anyone with thoughts on how I could bore out the clip from a slim line with out ruining it?

You could probably enlarge the hole a little by hand with a tapered reamer, but slimline clips don't have a whole lot of meat on the ring to begin with - are they actually large enough to make a hole that would fit the mechanism?
