Just put my lathe back together after replacing the belt and having trouble reseating the spindle entirely. Finally got that done last night, so I wanted to turn a quick pen to make sure the bearings were ok.

Not a terribly flashy pen, but it's durable. I used figured ash on the pen.

Mostly I was using this pen to work on my photography. Based on some comments in the photography forum, I just took these pictures on my table saw, sitting on a white piece of paperboard. Just a 5000 lumen overhead LED shop light. Slightly different exposures. I guess the shadows aren't too terrible. I will try this with a pen with more color, and see how it turns out.

Well Kevin... The turning is excellent and the photography is also very nice. Well done.

Both photos are very nice. I like the first (left) as the background is brighter. But the second (right) is darker but closer.

A challenge... Closer but brighter. šŸ˜Š . Truly, this is just FYI! Both images are fine as is.

When I have time to waste, I tinker editing my photos - it does make a huge difference, but I also try to be mindful to keep things authentic.

Be well.

I have also played with the various image parameters (saturation, brightness, contrast, etc) but, like you, I worry about drifting away from accuracy. I'll keep plugging away. Hmmmn. Closer AND brighter....

Very nice. I definitely like the finish on the pen. Both photos turned out well. The first photo is really nice and the white back ground makes the pen stand out. The shadows on the first actually highlight the profile.

I played a bit more with the pen photography (...must get closer AND brighter...). I used an EDC mechanical pencil I made for my self some months ago, and the figured ash pen from earlier. This time I used my photo booth, and played with the settings on my phone. Still seems more art than science, only because I do not know the Y=f(x) of the settings (what x's do I play with to get a good Y (photo).

The lights outside of the photo booth create significant shadows - I have tried aiming them all different directions, from the sides, from above, etc. It seems like the simple shots I took last night with just my shop light and a white piece of paperboard look better than the photo booth.
