Losing a pet that grows with your family.
In this case, today we lost our 13 year old black lab mix.

She turned 13 two days ago. Yes, Friday she turned 13.

We have a yellow lab as well, who is just lost now.

RIP Cali. Thank you for 13 years of love, loyalty, laughs and companionship.

Yep, 3 weeks from Tuesday I lost my best friend too. He was Cody an 8 year old White Shepard. It really stinks when you lose a pet. So sorry for your loss.

Hi Rich, so sorry to hear about your loss. It's always hard to lose a member of the family. Human members of the family can understand what happened, I'm not sure that the remaining dog understands exactly what happened to his buddy.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss Rich. I'm having to deal with one of my lil dogs right now. Taking her to the vet first thing in the a.m. Our condolences.

I remember a quote from Will Rogers (?) "If dogs don't go to heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went!"

Lord; Let me be the person my dog thinks I am.....

Sorry to hear about your loss. Went thru the same thing about 11 years ago, and it wasn't much fun then, still not much fun to think about now.

I have two boxers. One I bought from a pet store some 9 years ago and the other I got from a rescue about 2 years ago. I just don't know what I'll do with my oldest one dies and I'm sure the other one will be totally lost too.

I'm really sorry to hear about anyone losing a pet, especially a dog. If people were as good as dogs, it would be a much better world out there.

Thanks for the kind words all.
We got her from a rescue at 42 days old. The minimum legal age that a dog can be adopted. Pure luck.

Funny story..
We had an American Eskimo at the time (wifes dog) who was very prissy. I had wanted a companion to play with, maybe catch a frisbee, etc etc

One day when my wife was at work, I called her and said
"You're gonna be mad at me"..
Why? What did you do? What did you buy?
"You'll see when you get home"
How much did you spend? What is it?
"You'll be home in a few, you can see then"
You got a dog, didn't you? Puppy? Male or female?
"You'll see!"

At that point, I jumped in the car and headed to the pound.
NO puppies at all. All their adoptees were 1+ years old. Which is ok, but I had to have a puppy.
Off to a rescue. NONE!
At this point, I'm thinking i'm screwed. I had it set up perfectly and now she's going to get home and see that I didn't have a puppy. She'll be hip to my scam. I'm done!
As I was walking out of the rescue, something caught my eye. It was a cage.
I asked a lady what was in the cage and she said "oh, those are our newest litter, 6 weeks old today!"

She took me to the cage where all the puppies were sleeping.
I asked if I can hold one and she said sure, and started to lift up the cage wall.

Out of the 10 or so puppies, the one black one woke up and walked across all the other sleeping puppies, right to me.
I knew it then. It was perfect. This dog chose me for a reason. This was my puppy.

When I got to the desk to fill out the paperwork, another lady asked which puppy I was getting and I pointed her out.
She said "oh, the hellian"... That made me scared.

"cali" turned out to be a perfect dog. She was very well behaved, easy and quick to train and very loyal. And, just to add to her perfection, she was a disc dog too. I could rip a disc 100 yards and she would track it down and nail it in mid-air. No matter how far I threw it, no matter how bad of a throw, didn't matter if it was low, high, sideways, she brought it back in her mouth, tail wagging.

I'll miss her for sure.

This is our other dog.
She's a yellow lab (she's a bit of a runt).. VERY loyal and loving, very obedient and she is the true "man's best friend".. She's a dogs dog.. Constantly in "play" mode. Loves to jump in the Jeep and stick her head out the window, loves to play with other dogs, etc etc

Guess she'll get a lot more attention now. She has mom and dad all to herself.

My sympathy

I know exactly how you feel....I lost my 12 year best friend in January...I still tear up thinking about him. He let me know how much he loved me every day of his life...whether I did good, bad or nothing, he still loved me and didn't care who knew it.

Here is a quote to remember " Good Friends, leave paw prints in our hearts" and another "If there ain't no dogs -- it can't be heaven"

My best wishes and deepest sympathy to you and yours.

It is like losing a human family member....most dogs just want to be your friend...unconditionally....Consider the 13 years you did have a gift. RIP Cali

Rich,
I feel your pain. We had a yellow that was a member of the family for 14 yrs. I had to put her down and she died in my arms. I buried her in the back yard and put up a little memorial for her. She still brings us joy when we look at old pics. They say a loss like this is like a broken bone. The initial pain hurts bad but it will heal. It will heal but it will ache forever.
Sorry to hear about your loss.

Oh man, sorry for you and your family. I thought I was going to loose my golden mix last year. I slept with her a couple nights after 2 surgeries. She did pull through, so I am really appreciating this extra gift from her! Glad yours made your life better.

Sorry to hear about this. we just recently had to put down our 13 year old Schnauzer as she had cancer. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. She was barely moving and was not eating and the vet said it would be selfish of us to try to keep her alive any longer. I called the kids home and the wife came home early from work. We took pictures and held her tight. Really sucked to lose her. We got her to bring joy into our lives right after my brother lost his wife (my wifes best friend) to a heart attack unexpectedly. Our little schnauzer brought us a lot of joy over the years.

Been there as well and it definitely is a heartbreaking ordeal to go through. Don't worry about Cali as she is there waiting when your time arrives. Bet she will be at the Gates to welcome you home to rest.

Peace be with you Cali. Seems that you are definitely missed by everyone back home.

Rich,
We were in your place last month. My daughters rabbit died after a year of raising her and then our 14yr old yorkie had to be put down as well. It makes you appreciate the ones you love all the more and realize how brief of a time we have to show it. Sorry for your loss.
